Back to School Project
The purpose of the Back to School project is to promote literacy, a love for learning, and excitement among school-aged foster children for the upcoming school year. Volunteers will set up a fun and exciting shopping environment for eligible foster children. The volunteers mentor and encourage by assisting each child in choosing appropriate supplies for their age range, and helping them to select a book or journal not related to school.
Book Drive Project
Volunteers work with our project partners to solicit, collect, sort, box and distribute new and gently used children's books. The collected books will be distributed to JLOC community project partners as well as at a major distribution event in August at the Metro Transit Authority facility downtown.
Wild Tuesday Story Time
Children under the age of 11 will enjoy a reading adventure at the Oklahoma City Zoo with Wild Tuesdays Story Time Safari. Every Tuesday in June and July children will enjoy hearing wild tales from volunteers during story time sessions. The sessions, which are open to the public, feature animal and nature related stories, a craft, and a visit from the Zookeeper. Volunteers read to the children as a group but also to organize and assist them with an accompanying craft.
Pauline Mayer Shelter Literacy for All Project
The goal of the Pauline Mayer Shelter Literacy for All Project is to provide a fun and educational playtime for children and youth in the temporary shelter. Volunteers organize literacy-based activities such as reading, art, and literacy based games as well as planning for and serving a snack.
