A Soldier's Story
Junior League volunteers for the Soldier's Story project provide literacy therapy for hospitalized patients at the Oklahoma City Veterans Administration Hospital. Working in pairs or teams, they assist with reading letters, books or magazines, playing games and puzzles, and general conversation with adult veterans. Volunteers meet weekly during day and evening sessions from September to May.
Cultural Literacy/World Neighbors
World Neighbors is a global project that promotes cultural literacy and is aimed at school-age children. The program introduces third through sixth grade students to a wide range of countries and regions. Volunteers prepare and teach classes on a different country each session at various Oklahoma City libraries. Sessions are held twice monthly, one on a weeknight and one on Saturday afternoon, from September through April. Sessions are free and open to the general public.
Leaders Read
The Leaders Read program is dedicated to literacy readiness among preschoolers. Volunteers spend time reading individually to at risk children at a local daycare center. Volunteers also organize and prepare a craft for the children based on books they have read together. The Junior League provides book donations for the center. Each month, every child receives a book to take home. This program operates during the day from September through December.
