These are just a few of the many community projects supported by the Junior League of Oklahoma City.
A SOLDIER’S STORY at the Oklahoma City Veterans Administration Medical Center – Junior League volunteers provide literacy therapy for patients in the extended care unit. Working in groups with the veterans, they read books or magazines, play literacy-focused games, work puzzles, and engage in general conversation. Volunteers also plan special events throughout the year such as holiday parties and a Super Bowl watch party. Party favors given at these events encourage reading and journaling.
BACK TO SCHOOL with Citizens Caring for Children – Volunteers promote literacy by setting up a store-like environment to provide new backpacks and school supplies to eligible foster children in the Oklahoma City area. Junior League volunteers set up the store and provide support and encouragement by personally assisting the children in selecting their supplies. Each child also receives a new book and journal to keep.
BOYS & GIRLS CLUB CHILD LITERACY PROGRAM – Volunteers work with at-risk children to promote literacy and cultivate an overall excitement for reading. The Junior League follows a prepared lesson plan that includes themed books, a craft and a snack. Volunteers work with children to improve their literacy skills by encouraging them to read aloud, to identify key vocabulary words, and to play games with a literacy focus. The project operates on summer afternoons, as well as, fall and spring evenings.
KIPP, REACH COLLEGE PREP – This project’s goal is to provide enrichment activities for middle school students. This Oklahoma City Public School serves at-risk children who have made a family commitment to academic success. Volunteers plan and prepare events to enhance life skills such as cooking, career development, etiquette and political science. Junior League members also serve as positive role models for the students. KIPP is a nationally recognized program for academic success. Junior League volunteers schedule and complete ten Saturday enrichment classes throughout the school year.
WILD TUESDAY STORY TIME SAFARI – This project is a summertime program that is held on Tuesdays in June and July at the Oklahoma City Zoo. Junior League volunteers read a book and lead an accompanying craft project for children under the age of eleven. Additionally, students and or zookeepers visit the sessions to present fun and interesting information about the animals. The sessions are free, open to the general public and take place rain or shine.
YWCA FINANCIAL LITERACY PROGRAM – This program facilitates educational meetings promoting financial independence. Clients are adult women living in the Passageways Emergency Shelter. During this redesign year, Junior League volunteers will work with YWCA staff to finalize a curriculum to include basic financial skills such as budgeting, establishing a savings account and managing a checkbook. Clients will learn resume writing, job searching skills, and how to evaluate job prospects and offers. Additionally, they will develop a plan to purchase a home and save for retirement.
